I have a terrible cold...

and I would LOVE if any of you were willing to critique my comp for assignment 1 via blogspot.
I created a bit of a National Geographic/National Geographic Traveler hybrid-design. The dimensions and the positioning of the elements on the page is very much like National Geographic and the type styles are inspired by Traveler. I chose the feature image because I liked that it was candid and it looked as though the farmer pictured was really working. The two additional items are a short bio on the farmer and a recommended blend.

Thanks in advance for any comments, suggestions or feedback!

  1. Hi, Libby. I really like your article and your layout. I love your drop cap and your side bar elements. Is the adornment that is above Nicaragua something you created or an image you imported? I'd love to hear how you did it. I have two suggestions: consider the placement of your departmental heading. If that picture wasn't there, would the heading still fall in the same place? If not, then I think you should move it up unless it is standard for the magazine to move the headings depending on the page layout. Also, the first sentence of your last paragraph is confusing, even though I know what you mean. Perhaps something like: "Replace your morning cup of coffee with a certified fair trade product" or "Replace your regular brand with a certified fair trade brand". Hope you feel better!

  2. Hi Stephanie,
Thanks for your feedback- it's really helpful.
The adornment above Nicaragua is just a combination of a stroke and a small triangle. If you create a stroke in indesign and open up the strokes window, there are many different styles you can choose from. That one is "thick-thin" at 3pts.
Then, click and hold on the rectangle tool in the side toolbar, and select "polygon". If you just click once on your page you will get an options window- you can set the sides to three and enter dimensions to create your triangle. Then just position it anywhere on the stroke. I can show you in class next week if this is not clear!

I placed the heading in that spot because I wanted it knocked out of the image without blocking any of the farmer. Also, the green leaves gave me a dark enough background that the white type would still be legible.

I just finished revising my article- I'm going to adjust my layout to match. I'll repost the final when I'm done.

Thanks again, I hope class went smoothly yesterday!

  3. It looks a touch newspaper. I think if you moved the photo down a bit and made room for the department name and possibly the magazine name that would work more. Maybe also adjusting the distance between each line, the leading, as well. It feels a little distant between each line.
